Several flyers threatening genocide of all Muslims in the US and Europe were left in public places in the Massachusetts city of Revere, a small city near Boston with a sizable Muslim population.
WCVB-TV, a Boston ABC affiliate, reported on the incident.
Employees at the MGH Revere HealthCare Center discovered several notes on the morning of 17 February, strewn across the ground near the Revere Beach Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) station.
Some of them read:
All Muslims will be killed in American + Europe + Muhammad the prophet’s image will be burned unless ISIS surrenders within 72 hours!!!
We must kill all Muslim in America, destroy + burn all Koran books
Police say they are investigating who may have written the messages, and whether the threat posed is real. A police representative told the media that it “is disturbing when you see anybody making threats of this nature.”
“We have to treat it with a level of legitimacy until we determine otherwise,” the officer said. “I hope to God it’s not; I hope it’s the ravings of a deranged person but, either way, we need to address it.”
WCVB says “it is arguably hate speech, and it threatens mass murder.” That something can threaten genocide of millions of people yet not constitute hate speech is rather strange yet, regardless, it is clearly an obscenely violent threat.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim civil rights organization in the US, drew attention to the threats.
This incident follows a wave of anti-Muslim threats and attacks in the US.
- On 10 February, three Muslim-American students were brutally murdered, “execution-style,” in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in what their family and friends say was a premeditated hate crime;
- on 12 February, racist Islamophobic white men white men brutally beat an Arab-American man at a Kroger in Dearborn (with help from a Kroger employee, according to a witness);
- on 14 February, an Islamic school in Rhode Island was vandalized by white supremacists;
- on 15 February, racists spray painted swastikas, “get out,” and “Muslims get out” on a Hindu temple and nearby school in Bothell, Washington;
Imraan Siddiqi, a Muslim American activist who has served on CAIR-Arizona’s Board of Directors since 2011, has kept track of the numerous anti-Muslim attacks.
