International Women’s Day Posters Throughout History

On 8 March, people around the globe celebrate International Women’s Day. Formerly known as International Working Women’s Day, the holiday was created by socialists in the early 20th century. Socialist feminists organized an International Women’s Conference at the 1910 general meeting of the Second International, at which they called for a day to honor women workers everywhere. It has been celebrated ever since.

Unsurprisingly, given its origins in proletarian internationalism, International Women’s Day has a long and rich history around the world, particularly in the Global South. Journalist Roqayah Chamseddine compiled some of the historic posters celebrating the global holiday.
